How to spend more time outside enjoying your lawn and garden
My family and I have a saying,"The yard is our living room." We spend so much of our time outside enjoying the weather that we consider it the coziest and most comfortable space we have. Many people today are spending less time in their actual living rooms, and more time on their porches enjoying summer breezes, or roasting marshmallows around a fire pit on cool fall evenings. For some, the backyard has even become an extension of the kitchen, with an outdoor pizza oven or a must-have grill. If you want to spend more time outside entertaining friends and family, there are many ways to make your lawn feel like an extra room in your home that you can enjoy year-round—even when it's too chilly for sitting around a campfire or eating s'mores by the pool. Here are just a few ideas for making your yard into an outdoor living space:
Center your furniture around a fire pit
-
Center your furniture around a fire pit and hang twinkle lights overhead.
-
Add a welcome mat at the front door.
-
Put bird feeders outside your window to attract birds, or plant flowers that attract bees and butterflies in front of the windows so they can come inside to feed on them.
-
Let your grass grow long, so clover will grow out of it, which is good for attracting deer and rabbits!
Put a bird feeder outside your window
Bird feeders are a great way to attract wildlife to your backyard. They're also decorative and functional, as they give you the chance to watch birds eat while they are outside their natural habitat.
Bird feeder styles range from simple and utilitarian to elaborate, artistic creations made from recycled materials. The more elaborate models often have glass or Plexiglas sides that allow you to watch birds up close without frightening them off with loud noises or large crowds of people passing by on foot or in vehicles while you're enjoying your yard decor.
Decorate the mail box post
You can make the mail box post a focal point of your front yard. If you have decorative mail box, use it! Paint the post bright red or yellow, and place flowers around it. Or hang a bird feeder from the top of it to attract birds to fly over your lawn and garden decor. You can also use this area as an opportunity to hang wind chimes and/or planters for flowers or herbs that will also add color and sound to your yard.
If you don't have a decorative mail box, don't worry! You can still make this area into something special with some basic landscaping supplies:
-
A few long branches from shrubbery (they should be at least two feet long)
-
Stakes or hooks made specifically for hanging things on posts
Plant flowers that attract bees and butterflies
Plant flowers that attract bees and butterflies.
-
Bees are the most important pollinators, but they also provide food for many animals and birds.
-
Butterflies and moths, while not necessary for our survival, are pretty to look at (especially if you have a camera). Some species of butterfly even have medicinal uses like treating pain or headaches.
Let your grass grow long
Let your grass grow long and let clover grow out of it, then cut lawn art like hearts and arrows into it with your lawn mower for fun, seasonal designs to enjoy.
Use the power of sedum to create a living wall in a small space like an entryway or a corner of your garden.
Put wind chimes in every shady spot in your yard
Put wind chimes in every shady spot in your yard, then relax and enjoy the melody of wind chimes on breezy days. Wind chimes are available in many different styles and colors, and they can be used indoors as well as outdoors. Wind chimes are a great way to add a musical element to your yard.
Hang a hammock
If you're looking for a way to relax, why not try hanging a hammock in the shade of your favorite tree? They're great for reading, napping and just hanging out with friends. When it's nice outside, grab some snacks and drinks and enjoy the views from your own private hammock in the garden. And don't worry about putting your feet up on those hard surfaces; our portable hammocks are made from durable materials that won't leave any marks or scratches behind when you take them indoors again!
It's important to take time to relax, spend time with friends and family and enjoy nature
If you are like most people, your schedule is busy and often hectic. It's important to take time for yourself, relax and spend quality time with friends and family.
It's also important to enjoy the beauty of nature around you. The colors of the flowers in your garden can be a source of joy during those long days when it seems like there isn't enough time in the day to get everything done.
