Must have kitchen prep products

Cooking is a hobby of ours, and one that we take very seriously! Because we love to cook so much, I've developed a bit of an obsession with the products used in cooking. In the first installment of "Must Have Kitchen Products," we'll talk about my favorite kitchen prep products.

Aprons

A kitchen apron is one of the most basic pieces of cookware. They're generally made out of cotton, nylon or polyester and can be single-breasted or double-breasted. A basic apron will consist of one piece of fabric while others might be multiple pieces stitched together. Aprons can also be fastened with buttons down the front, snaps along the waistband or velcro on each side.

Where you choose to buy your kitchen aprons is up to you! You can find them at department stores like Target or Walmart as well as online shopping sites like Amazon and eBay.

Cutting boards

A cutting board is one of the most important kitchen tools in your arsenal. The choice of cutting board should be based on what you're going to use it for, and which material will be best suited for the job.

  • Plastic: This is by far the most common type of cutting board and can be used to cut raw meat. However, plastic boards don't retain their shape as well as wood or bamboo, so they won't last as long before they become wobbly or cracked.

  • Wood: Wood remains a popular choice because it's durable and easy on knives (unlike glass). It's also heat-resistant up to 350°F (177°C), which makes it good for serving hot dishes directly from your stovetop. You should avoid using wooden cutting boards with acidic foods like tomatoes or lemons; over time these can actually cause damage to wooden boards!

  • Glass: Glass may seem like a strange choice at first glance but these days there are many different styles available from manufacturers like Pyrex® that are specifically designed for food prep purposes such as slicing veggies or chopping herbs right on top without worrying about cross-contamination between ingredients due to residues left behind after washing off splattered juices during preparation time periods."

Measuring spoons

These little guys are a must for baking. You'll need them to measure out flour and sugar, among other things. They're also useful in the kitchen when you want to make sure that everything you add is equal.

These are some of the best measuring spoons we've seen! They're clear so you can see exactly how much each spoon holds, they have rubber grips so they don't slip or scratch your counter top (and they block out light), and they come in a set of four sizes so you won't have to worry about buying different types later on down the road.

A good knife set

A good knife set is a must-have in any kitchen. A sharp, well-made blade can make every prep task easier, but there's a lot to consider when buying knives beyond just the brand. Here are helpful tips for making sure you're getting what you need:

A full set of knives with an array of different sizes and shapes will help you tackle any food preparation task with ease. The most important part of this equation is that they're sharp enough to do their job properly—your cooking (and your fingers) won't thank you if they aren't! It's also important not to buy cheap sets from big box stores—they may have some issues with durability or balance that can make using them frustratingly difficult.

There are many types of steel used for knife blades; stainless steel has been proven as one of the best options because it doesn't rust easily but still holds an edge well over time even when exposed to moisture regularly during use. Some knives made out of harder materials like carbon steel will stay sharper longer than those made from stainless steels but they require extra care in order not corrode under certain conditions (like contact with acidic foods). If possible look at reviews online before buying so see what other people say about how well these types hold up over time!

Colanders

The colander is the most basic kitchen prep product, but it's also one of the most versatile. If you don't have a colander in your kitchen right now, what are you waiting for? Go get one!

The best colanders are made from stainless steel or other non-reactive materials that won't leach chemicals into your food when they come in contact with moisture or steam.

Colanders can be used for more than just draining water from pasta and beans: try using them to strain out seeds from homemade lemonade, or put rice directly into a colander after cooking to drain off excess liquid (this is called "forbidden rice"). You might also want to pick up some cheesecloth so that when you make a batch of fresh pesto at home, you'll already have something handy with which to strain it once all of those delicious herbs have been chopped up into tiny pieces.

Knife sharpener

A good knife sharpener is an essential part of kitchen preparation. A dull knife can be dangerous and will slow down your prep time by forcing you to exert more effort on each slice or chop.

Use a sharpener designed specifically for kitchen knives—this usually means that it's made of ceramic, diamond, or another hard material that won't damage the blade but will grind away at the metal until it's sharp again.

Make sure it's easy to use: most sharpeners have guides that help you hold the knife at the proper angle while grinding; others require only one hand (like this model from Chef's Choice). The best models are also easy to clean: pull out any debris caught between the blades with an old toothbrush; wash off any residue with warm water; dry thoroughly before storing away in its original container or zip-top baggie.Keep this product handy when working in your kitchen so you'll always be ready for whatever task comes next!
